Prime Minister's House Tour, Home Hill, Devonport
- Duration: 1 Hours
Go behind the scenes of the political and private lives of Australian Prime Minister Joseph Lyons, his wife Dame Enid (the first woman elected to federal parliament) and their 12 children with this guided tour of their 1916 Devonport home.
Home Hill was the family home of Tasmania's only Prime Minister Joseph Lyons, his wife Dame Enid Lyons - the first woman elected to Australia's federal parliament - and their 12 children.
Built for the family in 1916, it became their haven from public life and remains largely as it was when Dame Enid last lived there in 1981, complete with her original furnishings and memorabilia.
Dame Enid's style is evident throughout the house, with an amazing array of wallpapers from the 1940s to the 1970s beneath classic pressed tin ceilings; and in the garden through the rock walls and paths, the pond and the garden rooms.
Every part of Home Hill houses a rich collection of the political and personal mementos of two people who dedicated their lives to public service and their family.
Home Hill will be closed for July and August 2024 to undertake much-needed housekeeping and collection work.
